Award Winning Photos at D-Light Studios Competition

I was very grateful to have my work Mixed Emotion (M.E.) be shown as part of the D-Light Studios Open Gallery Exhibition for this year's PhotoIreland Festival in Dublin. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to be there for the opening, but there were some great photos, thanks to the people who did attend and shared them with D-Light Studios. 

As it turned out, there was a photo competition running in conjunction with the exhibition, with all artwork being considered. 

I was very honored to hear the news that my work had won for Best Artwork and thankful for the generous prizes. I look forward to spending a day in the studio at some point in the future, and will very much enjoy the editions of BLOW Photography Magazine.

It's been a busy time for me this month in Ireland, checking out some of the incredible exhibitions that are on during the PhotoIreland Festival. It has been wonderful to be in Dublin for this photography festival.

Dis*truct*ure Opening Night

I was grateful for my work to be a part of the Dis*truct*ure exhibition this week at Con Artist Gallery in the Lower East Side of NYC. "Con Artist presents Dis•truct•ure, a show that explores the fragility of existence and the disturbances of an earthly mortality, as well as the transcendence of it, by examining themes of pattern, repetition, mutation, ritual, and spirituality surrounding the natural decay caused by disease. Examination of these themes not only helps to cope with the suffering that can be brought by disease, but also allows us to be hopeful and celebrate the tenacity of cycles and life in all of its forms. 5 plus 5 Exhibition; Opening Night

Last night was the opening night for 5 PLUS 5 at the Altamira Palace Gallery, IED Madrid. I was grateful to be invited to be a part of this exhibition that showcases the work of ten emerging photographic artists, curated by Moritz Neumüller; Five photographers who are based in the British Midlands and five who are based in Madrid. The selected artists are; David Sheperd, Dean O’Brien, Lauren Spencer, Nicola Onions and Oscar Parasiego, and from Madrid; Angela Losa, Anna Fawcus, Eoin Moylan, Inge Trienekens, and Juan Pablo Fassi. The projects shown in this exhibition orbit around themes such as memory, identity, space, the human condition and eternal subjects in the field of photographic creation. All the emerging practitioners selected to take part in this exhibition exchange use highly contemporary language and represent a new generation of globally connected artists that use the camera as one of many technological tools for image creation. Today the preparations for 5 PLUS 5 exhibition were taking place in Madrid, for the opening night this week on Tuesday October 28th at the Altamira Palace Gallery, IED Madrid. The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards in Malaga

I arrived in Malaga yesterday to attend the opening night of The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards. One of my photographs, 'In The Corner' from the series of work 'Children & The Art of Eight Limbs' was an award winner in the Pollux Awards earlier this year, and was selected to be included in this exhibition. With 54 photographers from 17 countries attending the opening night, it was a huge event, with some incredible talent. I would like to thank the Museo del Patrimonio Municipal for hosting this event, and all of the organizers from WPGA who did such a fantastic job in making this exhibition possible, with special thanks to Julio Hardy.

I received notification from the Worldwide Photography Gala Awards (WPGA) yesterday to let me know that one of my images had won an award in the Pollux Awards. The photograph, from the 'Children & The Art of Eight Limbs' series, has been selected to be exhibited in the 3rd International Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography which will open in Malaga, Spain, on September 18th at the Municipal Heritage Museum of Malaga.

SPACE | DIVIDED Exhibition Opening Night

Last night was the opening of the exhibition SPACE : DIVIDED, which featured my photographs as a part of this group show. Here is a little information about the exhibition which will be on until 02.05.2014, and some photographs from last night: 'Our culture is full of real and imagined divisions. The human desire for definition creates social, geographic, and structural boundaries that divide us. Breaking out of the white, cubed, confined space of a traditional gallery is the infatuation of many a contemporary artist, while others have discovered that constriction fosters creativity.'

Con Artist presents SPACE | DIVIDED, an exhibition of conscious and unconscious separations. Artists draw lines in the sand as they explore the aesthetic and psychological power of split space. They peek through holes in the wall to better understand the polarity of a space divided and capture the intensity of attracting opposites. Featuring work from 4 NYC artists and photographers.

Members Only opening night at CultureFix was a great success. Coming Soon: Members Only Exhibition @ CultureFix NYC

One of my photographs will be part of a group exhibition called Members Only at CultureFix in NYC, opening on September 19th, 2013 The exhibition is a group show featuring artists from the Con Artist collective under the curatorial theme of the self nude, and drawing inspiration from the exhibition style of the Academic Salons of 1800’s France. This will undoubtedly be one of this summer’s most stark, genuine, even uncomfortably honest exhibitions. The nude figure is a trope figure in art history, acting as subject and metaphor. For whatever reason we do this: Necessity, Narcissism, a quest for deeper understanding, maybe even boredom...The results are sure to be telling. We Con Artists stand here in the buff, but stand for so much more.

Genesis by Sebastião Salgado; Exhibition in London

The Natural History Museum in London currently has a photographic exhibition not to be missed. Genesis by Sebastião Salgado is a powerful collection of images that span across the world, depicting it with stunningly beautiful imagery. Salgado says of the Genesis collection, ‘This has been one of my longest photographic adventures: eight years researching, exploring and celebrating nature’s unspoiled legacy. I have journeyed through 32 countries to rediscover the mountains, deserts and oceans, the animals and peoples that have so far escaped the imprint of modern society. It is a pictorial depiction of the lands and lives of a still pristine planet. I feel Genesis also speaks urgently to our own age by portraying the breathtaking beauty of a lost world that somehow survives.  It proclaims: this is what is in peril, this is what we must save.’

Last night was the closing party of my joint exhibition 'Children & The Art of Eight Limbs' & 'Haiti', with Giles Clarke at Con Artist Gallery in NYC. Thanks to everyone who came out and made is such a successful and busy night, and a special thanks to Con Artist Gallery, Giles, Lawrence, Brian, Audrey, Oscar and Dave for their work in making it happen. For anyone who missed the show, I will be exhibiting 'Children & The Art of Eight Limbs' again in New York, at Circuit of Change: Gallery Night August 11th between 5pm - 7pm.

Exhibition Opening; 'Children & The Art of Eight Limbs' & 'Haiti'

Last night was the opening night of my joint show with Giles Clarke, at Con Artist Gallery, NYC. 'Children & The Art of Eight Limbs' is a series of photographs from my recent time in Thailand, where I spent 6 weeks documenting a group of young Muay Thai boxers. 'Haiti' is a series of work by Giles Clarke, 3 years after the earthquake. The show opened at 8pm and was a great success with a full house for the opening. Preparations for upcoming exhibition at Con Artist

The opening of my joint exhibition with Giles Clarke will be on July 10th at Con Artist Gallery in Manhattan. This social documentary exhibition will be on from July 10th to July 25th, with gallery nights on July 10th, July 17th and July 24th. My series of work is entitled "Children and the Art of Eight Limbs" and the photographs by Giles are from his series "Haiti" Over the past weeks we have been busy with preparations for the show. The Layer Behind: Opening Night at Con Artist

Tonight was the opening night of The Layer Behind at Con Artist Gallery. This group exhibition will run from June 12th until June 26th, curated by Marie Van Eersel and Laura Tack. The artists represented are:

17 Stories: Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur

On the weekend I was in Kuala Lumpur and I came across the Annexe Gallery in the Central Market, where there was an exhibition called '17 Stories'. The exhibition was a group show 17 stories told by 17 graduates from a Photography Diploma Course in Malaysia. Each student had presented a series of images and also printed a hard cover book with a larger selection of photographs. Sticky notes and pens were available at the reception to make notes and leave feedback for the artists, by simply writing thoughts and sticking the notes on the walls next to the artwork. There were some powerful images in the gallery. Khairil Safwan's series of work entitled 'Faith and Honor' explored the strength, faith and honor of Muslim women in Malaysian Society. Wan Iqbal, 22 years old, presented a series of work called 'Mencari Sinar', which documented the survival stories of the refugees of Rohingya. Zairyeirsyam's work called 'Variasi Warisan Silat' showed a descriptive series of images of the Malay art of self defense.

101 Tragedies of Enrique Metinides: Opening Night at Aperture Gallery NYC

Last night was the opening reception of 101 Tragedies of Enrique Metinides at Aperture Gallery in NYC 101 Tragedies is Enrique Metinides' selection of the key 101 images from his half-century of photographing crime scenes and accidents in Mexico for local newspapers and the notas rojas (or red pages--for their bloody content) crime press. Though Metinides’s photographs have been exhibited and published internationally, this is the first selection of images chosen by the photographer himself, and which offers his own account of his life’s work.

101 Tragedies of Enrique Metinides Exhibition at Aperture Gallery

 

This collection of photographs depicts accidents, tragedy and gruesome crime scenes  and other unfortunate events captured in a way that entices a certain curiosity in the viewer. In many of the photographs there is a focus not only the tragedy of the event, but also incorporating the reaction of onlookers, which draws the viewer in to feel almost a part of the scene.

The photographer, Enrique Metinides, who has never traveled outside of Mexico was not physically present for the opening night. However, he was available to talk to visitors at the opening reception via Skype set up on a computer near the entrance to the gallery.
