Around 3pm today, Fireman started to rush into the large department store, Century 21, in the financial district in lower Manhattan. Initially, shoppers were were not evacuated, whilst fireman came into the store, running a hose down the middle of the store to the fire in the basement. When the smoke started to get bad, the store evacuated all shoppers and staff. Hundreds of people pushed out into the street, and were moved behind police lines as the fireman extinguished the fire and continued working to contain the smoke. The cause of the fire was not given. The store reopened at 5pm.
