The colors and celebration of Holi Festival in India can be intoxicating. To heighten the enjoyment of Holi, Bhang (made from cannabis) is part of the ritual; In Varanasi the very intoxicating Bhang is prepared along the famous Ghats, culled from the leaves and buds of cannabis. It is used to make several different drinks and is also put into the thandai, pakoras and vadas that are eaten by all. Associated with Lord Shiva, the hemp plant is regarded holy by the Hindus and is an important part of the celebrations. Along side the cannabis, consumption of alcohol also plays its part in the day, with many of the men getting very drunk. These photos show the other side of the Holi Festival celebrations!
